Total data erase from a old HDD

  Giggle n' Bits 13:58 24 Aug 2008

Does a tool exhist that can actually destroy perosnall info from a old functioning hdd even though windows has been wiped ?

I have tried a tool called Wipe O or at least thats what you type when I run it in A: prompt.

Smashing a HDD up and cutting the plates within is my only idea.

That you wish not to fall in the wrong hands- then destroy the disk- its the only way.

There are Total erasure programs take a look here

But a determined hacker can reverse them.

Or download the drive manufacturers tools disk and overwrite the whole drive with 0s & 1s using the checking tools. Run it more than once though.

Unless it's going to be forensically examined by very special and expensive equipment, destroying a hard drive is totally unnecessary and environmentally damaging.

DBan and KillDisk will put your data well beyond reach.
