Toshiba laptop display only works on mains

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, 5ish year old, all was fine until one fine day..

The display back-lights stopped working except when plugged into the mains supply. Display is working but very dark.

I speculatively replaced the screen inverter with no success, any other lues good people?

I am pretty used to badgering with PSc but less so with laptops,

Thanks, Epirb.

If this is with battery in, the battery is dead. It should run okay without battery. Do you travel with the Laptop? if so a new battery would be in order. Is it WinME or XP home

Battery is actually still good, just before I lost the screen with battery power I would get about an hour and a halfs work out of it.

When the power is unplugged the Laptop is running fine it is just that the LCD backlight goes off. eg. Start a music track playing, unplug continue listening with no display, sometime later, plug back in and display returns and all carries on as normal.

OS is XP

Cheers, Epirb

Have you checked power settings in Control Panel?

I hadn't until you mentioned it no!

Have discovered that backlights go off on any setting other than maximum brightness, wonder what may cause that, could be the new inverter maybe?

Unfortunately no longer have old one to try.

Thoughts? and cheers for the steer!
