When I restart my laptop (98SE)the clock resets to 00:00 no matter what the realtime is.

Sounds like your CMOS battery is dead, you need to replace it. They cost a couple of pounds in any computer shop. It will be on your motherboard and looks like this. click here click here

Like Maj say's sounds like you need a new battery.Might be a bit difficult getting to it being a laptop.

Darn I didn't read that correctly, missed it was a laptop, sorry joeartis. Laptops are slightly different and vary in how to get to their battery, some are quite easy though it will mean removing the main laptop battery (for safety) and opening the case. Here's the Thinkpad's CMOS battery for example. What is the make and model of your laptop?

Thanks all, the laptop is a Toshiba Satellite 4070CDT of about 1999 / 2000 vintage.

Hmm, several different sorts of battery for that one I think. Worse still, will probably mean a little soldering work.
