Too hot?

Just recently (last few days) my pc crashes a lot after a year of stability - it is usually when doing something intensive like gaming. So I just started up PCALERT 4 and it says my system temp is 43 and my CPU is 79-84. I am guessing this is too high but would appreciate a more expert opinion. If it is, what can I do about it?

YES too high, suprised you have not had some sort of siren alert sounding.

Clean / replace fan, try new heat sink compound on CPU (just a smooth smear across the surface) make sure all old compound is removed

Probably a collection of dust impairing the heatsink, give it a good ole clean.
