suspect tiscali broadband is slow although its showing 2.3mbps on the little monitors down in r/h corner. is this accurate and is there a more reliable test

The speed information you are able to see on the Notification bar is normally the fastest speed available on broadband using the particular connection.

If you load a variety of Speed Tester's you will get a variety of readings.
This is due to the different criterion of each software, the state of the cable between exchange and home, the contention factor in your area[That is the number of accounts on your ISP's equipment- this is variable from 20 to over 50 on the more heavily used sites] the distance you are from the exchange- by street route not as the crow flies and last but not least - time of day.

If you are using a USB modem, then you might need to update the drivers from the manufacturer's website.

Tiscal normally supplies a Sagem [email protected] or Speedtouch 330 modem and the latter has an "up to 8MB" patch available.

But as I stated earlier, the 2.3MB on the Notification area panel is (normally) the maximum speed available on your line; some people might, for instance, have 512Kb or 1MB listed.
