Tiny policy with WinXP or recovery disk

I'm trying to help out a friend who has a 3 year old Tiny PC with a broken hard-drive. It was pre-installed with Win XP but there is no XP CD or recovery CD containing an image backup etc to use on a new hard-drive he purchased for the PC.
Does anyone know if this was Tiny's policy not to issue such CDs and if so how do they expect you to re-instate a PC if the hard-drive is fried?
p.s. his Tiny warranty expired ages ago.

The Tiny comany that he/she dealt with went bust so there will be little chance of gettign a disk assuming that they were handed out. *cough* always clone your drives

They probably expect you to send back the disk. That is the way a number of manufacturers were behaving recently.

PS A new hard disk can be purchased with an OEM version of XP so will not be over expensive.

I would suggest you contact Daniel Warren at [email protected] and seek advice from him.

that was installed on the PC was an OEM copy. The licence terms for OEM WindowsXP are that the software is linked to the computer. When that ceases to exist, so does the licence.

The problem is always this definition of 'computer', and I've asked Microsoft about it in the past. Their reaction hasn't always been to provide a definitive answer, but a new hard drive is not considered to mean that the computer has ceased to exist. You're allowed to make a copy of the Windows files, so you can put them into a partition on your new drive and install from there. None of that helps your friend however, as the horse has already bolted.

It looks as if your friend will need to buy a new copy of WinXP for the new drive.
