Thunderbird with XP home sp2.

  Gugs 23:23 23 Dec 2005

I have been using Thunderbird for many months without trouble.
Now, around a week ago, it started refusing to connect to my ISP unless I gave my password and, even then, took several tries to get through (it has always worked with a 'remembered password) My Outlook express worked OK.
Now it appears to have returned to 'normal'in getting connected but now refuses to send my Emails advising me that 'it had met with a problem and would have to close with apologies,'
As I often send longish Es this is not good news.
I have downloaded another copy of Thunderbird with no improvement.
Unless I can get this sorted I shall revert to Outlook Express.
Any ideas anyone please?.
