Thunderbird trying to send e-mail

Zone Alarm is continually warning me that my e-mail client, 'Thunderbird' is attempting to send e-mail.This is happening when I have no mail to send. I have ran AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware & a-squared, all with the latest updates yet it is still happening. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions.

At a guess Thunderbird is checking the mail server to see if there's anything there.

In Thunderbird, click on Tools - Account Settings - Server Settings, you will see how often Thunderbird is set to check for new messages.

Why two threads on the same subject?

Mainly because the question is why is thunderbird trying to SEND mail. NOT check for new e-mails.
