thinkpad boot-up problems

i have inherited an old ibm 600e thinkpad but when i try to turn it on the test messages tell me that the time is not set and the back-up battery is flat. it then asks for a password, when i press ENTER the computer shows a blue screen with the boot problems and thats it. the machine freezes. any ideras how i can sort it out?? i have alfrady changed the backup battery with no improvement
