Think I Have a Boot Sector Virus

  SABRE 09:25 13 Jul 2004

Following problems, reloaded XP Home Edn. After short while PC closes down and restarts. Think it may be a boot sec. virus. Any ideas on how to permanently delete it.
I have a full backup of my docs. so dont mind re-formatting if required.
Can someone help in clear and simple language?

Any messages when it shuts down?

Have you scanned with up-to-date anti-virus?

Problem is on my home PC and I am now at the office so can't give you the info directly, but it is the usual one when logged on for a short while a smwll window comes up mid-screen and says somethinh like 'Windows has enounterted a problem etc ...... and will close down in 45 secs.

I do have Norton Antivirus but having reformatted, it will be out of date.

1 How can I get it up to date if the PC keeps shutting down?

2 Will it scan/clear the Boot Sector?

This sounds more like Sasser than a boot sector virus.

Start, Run, type

shutdown -a

and click OK.

Go to Windows Update and get all Critical Updates.

Run Stinger click here
