Before getting rid of the icon I put a shortcut to the Recycle Bin on my Quick Launch Toolbar.

Removing the icon from the Desktop is a "Simple" registry modification.

Assuming that you're happy with going in to the registry then :

Start/Run , type regedit - then navigate to -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace

Look for the key - {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

Right Click this key then Export and save a copy somewhere convenient so you can restore the icon should you want to.

Next , delete the key ,close registry editor and reboot your machine.

It's gone!

To restore it right click the registry file you exported and "Merge".

why not change the bin icon for something else, search the web for icons, when you find the one you like download and change to that one, right click desktop, select customize desktop, highlight either the full or empty bin and select change icon
