How many times can I write over a CD-RW disc? What happens once the limit of the media has been reached?
The CD-ReWritable specifications guarantee at least 1,000 times. Some media manufacturers expect to have media available by the end of this year that can be re-written more than 10,000 times. Intelligent software, like the drag & drop file system UDF, prevents "wearing out" of particular areas on the disc (bad areas are copied to a new place on the disc), making the overwrite limitation a non-issue

It is said that a cd-rw disk is good for about 1000 write cyles. click here

dvd-rw has also been claimed to be good for 1000 write cyles

However the actual number probably varies considerably between manufacturers and storage methods.
