There is a major MS flaw if you run WMP 8......

  Gaz 25 20:59 07 Jan 2004

If you run the Windows Media Player 8 and have installed the WMP 9 codec...

The click here exploit opens your CD-ROM drive.

Although this is not a serious threat, it can be annoying and futher exploited.

Same exploit as here: click here

But that patch is for WMP 9 only, not 8 with the 9 codec.

So either update to 9...

Or stick with the problem.

MS will not be releasing a patch for this, they expect you to upgrade and put up with Rights Protection.

It's fine!

Many thanks for that but will stick with the problem i don't like WM9.

  Gaz 25 08:54 08 Jan 2004

Me too.

But the exploit works for me and you eh?

Why cannot there be a new release of the 9 codec?

But I have e-mailed Microsoft, and the usual response is:

"Unfortunatly we will not be providing a patch for the exploit described in yuor e-mail for WMP 8. If you are concerned about the security risk of this exploit please upgrade yuor computer to WMP9 and use the patch provided for WMP9 from auto update."

Although no one can do much, the maximum they can do with this exploit is take a look at your media libary.

One fix is to remove the WMP9 codec, but then you wont be able to play WMP9 tracks. This codec is an Active X control in Internet Explorer.

To check if you have this installed: click here

If the above opens your drives... Then you are not patched.

But as said. I am sticking with WMP 8, becuaseit is much more stable and does not include Digital Rights Management. No offence to anyone, but I want to play my OWN music on my OWN computer! Thats all.

suppose that exploit may come in handy if your cd/dvd drive is stuck

both of mine just popped open

  Gaz 25 10:59 08 Jan 2004

But in theroy, it should not happen.

But anyway, I am sticking with WMP 8.

I just found on a website a script to make it loop, ouch! Thats In / out and in / out all the time.

And even if the script is closed, it somehow programs the OCX file to continue. A restart cures this.

that would scare a few people i'm sure
