test comm port on computer

i need to check my com port is working (a program i am using is saying i am having connection problems). is there some kind of feedback loop device i can use to test my comm port (serial port) i am using a rs232 cable to talk to a machine controller

thanks for any help

ps if somebody could provide details of a company in the uk that would be appreciated

easiest thing would be to use an old serial mouse in the comm port.

depending on your os you can use hyperterminal to check com ports from accessories or system tools in program list.

run it and select the com port it has to dial, then depending on the version a large box will open and a prompt to dial and if it is ok you should get lines of figures etc showing it is open and ok
