I use Gandalfs link CCleaner to clear things up every so often, never caused me any problems. Has also proved handy when I had a virus that AVG couldn't or wouldn't remove for some reason, the infected file in question was in the temporary Internet files. Since CCleaner deletes them it got rid of the virus, handy I thought.

I can also recommend using CCleaner.
It's a very handy utility to have.
