TCP/IP binding

  woodyr6 15:43 12 Mar 2003

I am using Win98 second edn with a realtek pci network card.
I am trying to network two computers and the problem is I cannot get tcpip to bind to the network card. The entry for the network card is on it's own without the tcpip entry in front of it. tcpip is installed separately. I have endlessly uninstalled and reinstalled both the card and tcpip. Any ideas please

woodyr6, open Control Panel/Network in here select the Network cards properties and enter the IP address you want the card to run on with the subnet mask address also.

Specify IP address:
Subnet Mask:

On the second PC

Specify IP address:
Subnet Mask:

Im a little unclear as to your explanation. Where are you looking.

i am looking in network properties, and there SHOULD be an entry for the network card something along the lines of - TCP/IP->mynetworkcard, as it is it is just listed on its own without tcpip in front of it, i am sure this is the problem as the two are not 'bound' together.

adapter address ff-ff-ff-ff-ff
ip address -

i cannot ping the machine it is connected to which is

i don't know where it got the ip address from since I am trying to allocate it dynamically from the other machine - but the other machine can't have given it an ip address if i can't ping it

There is a problem with the MAC Address it should not be ff-ff-ff-ff-ff

Now how to reset it....

Try Start button and select Run. Enter winipcfg and click OK. Press the "Release All" button.
Then use the Renew All button. Has it changed

If not can you reinstall the drivers.

You are right - it was the network card - well i hadn't realised that the mac address was at fault. I put in another network card and all now works!
thanks to everyone.
