A pal asked me to help out with a modem that had suddenly stopped performing.
We played all the tricks.
Uninstall reinstall, swapped slots, checked cable [it had been working but suddenly stopped].
In the end we concluded the modem had died, and purchased another.
But no - it was the same story.
We did notice that when installing a modem Windoze seemed to select COM ports at random.
First it was COM Port2 then 3 or 4.
The machine sitting on the desk with case open we could hear the modem clicking on/off as we activated it
But the message routine was always the same.
The first dial out 'Click' then the message 'Could not connect to remote computer'
Second dial out 'Modem not installed properly'
On another occasion I listened in on the phone.
As the modem activated the line went 'live' but no dialling, then error message.

In the end my pal and I gave up and he took it to the local shop

The guy there listened to the tale
Did a 'Something' to the ports and everything was hunky dory.
What did he do?
He wasn't saying of course
We sorely would like to know.
To save a bob or two when there is a next time as there surely will be...
