System unstable. Should i format hard drive ?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.
My PC has been very unstable lately. It crashes on a regular basis now.
The error message i get most often is the following...

For information i am useing the following spec...
Windows XP pro. (Service pack 2)
Radion 9600 pro graphics card.
Zone Alarm firewall.
Norton Anti-virus.

I recently downloaded a program called "A-squared" and this removed 41 files of malware from my system. This however did not solve my problems.
Then i stumbled upon "registry fix" which i have downloaded also.
However, during the scan i can see it finding around 150 corrupt files in my registry. Before the scan finishes though, it causes my system to crash.I have been unable to complete a scan.

This makes me assume my registry is damaged beyond repair and a format is my only option.

Could my assumption be correct ?
What precautions would you advise as i have never attempted to format my hard drive before.

Thanx in advance of your responce.

Try these 3 programmes first and turn off your system restore....

1) MS here delete all it finds.

2) Ccleaner from click here Delete all it finds.

3) Regseeker from click here

Use the three in the order that I have typed them and turn your system restore back on and set a restore point.
