system restore

Any thoughts please - Twice now during the last few months my anti virus program (NTL Netguard) has found and deleted a virus)
I have found that the virus remains in System Restore unless it is shut down and restarted. This clears the problem but why have a virus checker that lets in a virus in the first place rather than deleting it on entry? Do they all work like that?
You can tell what is wrong as when the virus is there you System Restore will not restore to any point, you have to shut it down to clear the virus which is now only in that one place, restart it and wait for new restore points.
Is there a work around for this, should I buy Norton or something?

Get AVG or Avast instead click here - both free. Kaspersky or NOD32 if you want to pay.

OK Think I will do as brundle suggests but -
How do you change from one antivirus program to another, is there not going to be an unprotected period between disabling or removing one and installing the new one?
