I,m installing a mobo (ASRock P4VM890) and it says in the manual that it is compatable with DDR400 and DDR333 memory sticks. I have seen other boards say they will take "up too ddr400" does this mean it will be alright to use DDR266.

Yes. Make sure your processor FSB is correct, it will be 133mhz for DDR266, 166mhz for DDR333 and 200mhz for DDR400. You can fit faster memory in a slower system with no problem, but not the other way round. Better explanation here; click here
