switching off wireless mode on belkin router

I have installed devolo dlans as an alternative to the wireless setup I had. They are working fine, and the network speed seems good.

However, I want to switch off the wireless signal from my router (Belkin F5D7231-4) router's menu (set wireless mode to Off) my network speed drops dramatically.

Belkin seem to have no answer, but say that unchecking the broadcast ssid is sufficient to stop any signals from the router.

Can anyone advise if switching off the broadcast ssid will stop any signals at all? If not, does anyone have any idea why switching off the wireless on the router should effect my wired speed?

Thanks a lot
