switching mother boards..

i plan to change motherboards from AMD athlon 1.3with sdram to AMD 2800xp with DDR memory sometime in the future. I was just wondering if its possible to switch boards without reformating the hard disks and loosing all my data.

thanks in advance

ratmanfrommars, sometimes you can get away with it, but it is probable that you will get a whole load of errors due to the motherboard trying to run with the wrong drivers. It is much safer to assume that you will have to reformat and reinstall.

You might be ok, Win XP will deal with it much better than Win 98.

Why not partition your hard drive copy your data to the new partition, you can then format c: without losing any data

I think you are aware there may be difficulties.

If you are using W98SE or earlier then think of using a later version of Windows. I was told there is a top limit on processor speed which you might exceed, and that would spoil your whole day.

Otherwise expect few problems particularly if you run the motherboard drivers disk first to get the "foundations" right.
