svchost.exe using 99% CPU

  sicon67 10:28 20 May 2007

My girlfriends laptop is grinding to a halt because svchost.exe is cranking all the way up to 99% of CPU resources.
I have been ending the process for her to carry on using the machine.
It is the SYSTEM user name and when I have stopped it, I have noticed that there is still another version of it running with no problem.
I have ran a virus check with AVG free edition with no results found.
How can this be removed or stopped safetly permanently.
Thanks in advance for any help received.

Check your windows updates.

Turn off auto updates temporarily and see if this helps.

Also run your antispyware apps, have a look here for some advice click here

According to click here
there maybe a fix being released around the 22-05-07.

However, the cause of it is not clear cut.

Thanks everyone, problem resolved.

net stop wuauserv
rmdir /Q /S %WINDIR% SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
net start wuauserv

into command prompt cured the problem after turning off microsoft updates and instead having windows updates instead.

I did suspect that MS updates had caused the problem as it only occured after automatic updates had been downloaded and my girlfriend doesn't download anything else.

Cheers everyone.

I've looked with interest at your thread because I, too, have CPU usage of 100% when svchost.exe is operating. I then downloaded the supposed fix and installed it, but have not seen any appreciable improvement. Perhaps you can tell me where/how do I cancel the Microsoft Updates and how do I get to type the resolution that you did in the paragraph above in the command prompt? I have XP SP2.

I've now found how to disable Microsoft Updates. (Start/All Programs and Microsoft Update. Disabled it on the window that eventually came up which was asking the question!
