My girlfriends laptop is grinding to a halt because svchost.exe is cranking all the way up to 99% of CPU resources. I have been ending the process for her to carry on using the machine. It is the SYSTEM user name and when I have stopped it, I have noticed that there is still another version of it running with no problem. I have ran a virus check with AVG free edition with no results found. How can this be removed or stopped safetly permanently. Thanks in advance for any help received.
I've looked with interest at your thread because I, too, have CPU usage of 100% when svchost.exe is operating. I then downloaded the supposed fix and installed it, but have not seen any appreciable improvement. Perhaps you can tell me where/how do I cancel the Microsoft Updates and how do I get to type the resolution that you did in the paragraph above in the command prompt? I have XP SP2.
