svchost.exe runs at 100%

Yesterday computer ground to halt. 100% processing power sapped by an instance of svchost in task manager. Did virus scan - nothing. Set restore point but as soon as antivirus updated got back to problem. Removed antivirus and problem has gone after went to security centre and tuned off automatic updates.

Anyone know why this happened? Was using Avast - shall I put it back on or go for AVG

I had this problem. It was caused by Zone Alarm. Solved it by going back to an earlier version.

Hi, if you try changing the firewall and you still have problems,Switch off your Microsoft automatic up-dates,And try and install them manually,Then reboot your computer and switch your automatic up-dates back on,See if that does it.

Which instance of svchost is using the 100%?

Some of these service are needed to run by windows, and other may need to be updated or stopped.

Thanks buteman - tried the Microsoft hotfix but unfortunately this does not work.

This 100% utilisation also happens if you go to the windows update site on the internet.
