Suspicious network traffic

My laptop seems to be sending huge amounts of data via the internet. Is there a way of identifying which software is communicating or the destination of the traffic?

How do you know it is sending huge amounts of data via the internet?

You could run something like this:

Or run a personal firewall which should inform you as connections are being made.

It may just be 'normal' traffic between your laptop and your router.

Thanks for the reply silverous - managed to track it down eventually... I blocked all ports to the internet and it was still sending large amounts of data (approx 200 packets per second, started to worry after 8000 packets had been sent and still counting!) Tracked it down to a failed network card in the printer. I have replaced it (see, keeping lots of old parts does help, if only I could convince my partner of that...) I haven't quite worked out what was happening, possibly the last remnants of a printout which hadn't been resolved? Anyway all has gone quiet and I can get back to work! :)
Cheers
