Surfing the web with XP

I have recently updated from Windows ME to XP. At first, surfing the web seemed much faster, but then I downloaded Service Pack 1 and everything slowed down and using the internet became virtually impossible. I have uninstalled SP1 and Internet Explorer and then reinstalled Internet Explorer 6 from a PC Advisor disk. However, things still seem very slow. Netscape and Opera have also been tried wihtout any improvement. Any one any ideas on how to speed things up (and Broadband isn't available where I live)?

start - run then type msconfig and hit the enter key - go to the top right most tab - startup. take the tick out of all the boxes except the virus checker and firewall if you have one. reboot and put a tick in the box in the warning message. This should speed things up a bit.
