I have some problems with my old Intel mb in one PC, such as prinary IDE not working and one or two other problems. I have the Gigabyte and Asus MBs spare and wonder whether I could substitute either using same CPU and RAM. I have summarised the CPU and memory info from their manuals.

Let me rephase the question/.

For all we non-experts, if it fits, is it OK?

If a P4 fits is that OK?

If the RAM fits, will it work,

Assuming NO FORCE i.e., ZIF

Is this the criterion?

Fairly easy I think: consult the manuals for the substitue MB's and if the socket 478 will take an intel cpu and the memory is compatible with the Mb then all other peripherals should slot in and the machine should run ok. the only issue really is the cpu and ram. ZIF doesn't come into it if the socket is compatible then the cpu will fit - only the heatsink/fan may have issues locating on the MB. If ram is listed PC2100, Pc3200 etc and it is not above the limits for the MB then it will work. BIOS may need the settings checking, but will auto detect the changed cpu and ram.
