Strange happenings with "MS Update"

My Vista Ultimate PC is set to notify me of available updates and for the last few months it has advised me on a daily basis that "New updates are avaliable"(yawns).
This is repeatedly the IE8 update, nothing else.
Although I am using IE8 on my XP SP2 lappy and finding it OK, I have hitherto resisted MS's advances regarding my PC since the forum seem to feel it is still not to be trusted!
I'm not sure if Microsoft have decided to "bring in the heavy mob" to persuade me, but today when booting I saw a brief "black screen" message after POST whilst Vista was loading (saying I know not what), but this was followed by the "Configuring updates, stage 2 of 3..." screen!!
What updates I thought? I've not downloaded any!!
Once up and running, I consulted my update settings...these had changed from my prefered, "Check for updates", to "install automatically"!!
Checking "Update history", the only one installed today was a Defender definitions package (KB915597).
Sure enough, the downloaded update that is now waiting installation is...IE8!
Is this just MS getting cheeky by changing my prefered settings ion the hope I'll install IE8, or is there something dastardly at work??

This one fell on deaf ears!
Just posting so that I get the option to tick as "resolved" lol
