Storing a printer

I have just bought a new Multi Function printer, my old printer is a Canon I850 and it is in perfect working order. I want to keep it as a spare or until perhaps one of the family wants it.
The question is should I take the half used cartridges out and throw them away or would I be better leaving them in the machine.
Thank you for any advice.

Hi, just reporting my own experience - a friend of mine gave me an Epson CX3200 All-in-one which had not been used for over a year. I was pleasantly surprised that when I tried it, everything all worked ok. It had been left exactly as when last used.

Have you tried contacting Canon for their advice?

You are better leaving them in the printer otherwise the inkjets will clog up due them being dried up if you take them out.

Thank you both for your advice, I will leave them in the printer.

I put back into use an Epson which had been out of action for over 2 years. The cartridges had been kept in. It needed a head clean but then printed fine (albeit slowly compared to new one).
