the PC has had the Novell option enabled in Network Connections..or the 'Way windows starts' has been changed..It sounds like your in Classic Mode.
First goto: Start > Control Panel > Ensure You're in Classic View (on the left hand side of control panel, click switch to classic view if you only have around 10 icons on the screen)...
Open up user accounts > Click 'Change the way users log on or off'. Untick the Welcome screen.
Failing this: Click Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right Click on your connection, Usually Local Area Connection 2, choose properties. Look down the list and see if Novell is there. If it is, click on it and click 'Uninstall'. This is providing you are not using Novell on a network.
