The following box has only recently started appearing on my parents PC on startup:

Windows Professional XP
This computer has been locked. Only ????????? (there is a 9 digit number there)/owner (name of owner in brackets) or an administrator can unlock this computer.

????????? (9 digit number again/owner - Has their name here

Password - they don't have one

Click OK

Why has this appeared as it wasn't always there?

What has caused it and can it be taken off?

They can still get to their desktop by clocking on the OK button.

Does that make a difference to what you have just advised?

Can anyone help me?

the PC has had the Novell option enabled in Network Connections..or the 'Way windows starts' has been changed..It sounds like your in Classic Mode.

First goto: Start > Control Panel > Ensure You're in Classic View (on the left hand side of control panel, click switch to classic view if you only have around 10 icons on the screen)...

Open up user accounts > Click 'Change the way users log on or off'.
Untick the Welcome screen.

Failing this:
Click Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right Click on your connection, Usually Local Area Connection 2, choose properties.
Look down the list and see if Novell is there. If it is, click on it and click 'Uninstall'.
This is providing you are not using Novell on a network.

Make sure that the welcome screen is ticked..

RicScott -

They cannot change the way users log on and off as they get this box over the top :-

User Account

Client Services for netware has disabled the welcome screen and fast user switching.

To restore these features you must uninstall Client Services for Netware.

OK

Anyone know what to do now?

Anyone help?

If you can get into windows by just clicking [OK], Netware is Novell. Follow that then try it..

Start - settings- network connections - right click the network (lan or dialup) select properties - highlight Client Services for Netware- click uninstall.
