Startup glitch - seems user.exe corrupted

  g0slp 07:01 01 Mar 2003

Running W98.
Trying to start 'puter thiis morning, starting sequence gets so far then hangs. Trying to restart in safe mode gets so far, then very quict screen flash say "user.exe corrupted - you need to reinstall windows".

I tried the WINDOWS/OPTIONS/CABS/SETUP route from the startup menu, but Scandisk gets to 5% and hangs too. (on "user.exe").

Any suggestions on overcoming this without a full reinstall gratefully received.

g0slp, Microsoft think your Ddeml.dll file is missing or corrupted. Try this knowledgebase article http: // (remove the space after the http: before pasting the link into your browser address window)

Well, I tried Gongoozler's suggestion, & in normal circumstances it would, I think, have worked. However, in this case the problem was damaged segments of the HDD, although I'd had no warning. (Only discovered this as below).

I was able to remove the HDD & put it into another 'puter as an additional drive, then ran Scandisk on it. Fortunately I was able to get the HDD back into shape to work, & it's presently back in my machine. I back up regularly anyway, as a matter of course, but it'll be backup time at every shutdown until I get a new drive!

Hope this helps others in future.

Don't ya just LOVE these beasts........

Thanks again to Gongoozler.
