START UP PROBLEMS

I am encountering problems booting up my pc. On start up 3 or 4 error messages appear before I can get to my desktop and it takes some time to sort these out.
Firstly, a large white square appears stating that I should close or ignore MMTASK = error program protection fault mmsystem.dll (LOCUMSERVER). Then I receive a number of smaller windows which state,
WINHLP32 fault generated OLE32.dll
CCAPP fault generated OLE32.dll
After bootup should I try to listen to sound I receive a message that no sound card is present.
Things were working perfectly until 2days ago, then everything went belly up.
Any help would be appreciated.

What OS?

IF XP, try

start

run

sfc /scannow

If win98:

start

run

sfc

and follow instructions. It will need the CD.
