Speeds For Burning

I always burn my DVDs etc at the slowest setting. Do I need too? A friend always burns at the fastest and doesn't have many problems. What are the benefits of burning slowly? Does it have more 'passes' or what?

Should I continue to burn at the slowest if I am not pushed for time or what do people think?

I use nero and a top flight laptop and I still make coasters when I try and burn at top speeds, so my are burnt at 4 or 8 times, much better.

Many people have their own ideas of burning speeds, but I prefer 4x speed although my DVD writes at upto 16x speed I find 4x to be the best.

I use one or two speeds below the maximum - it helps extend the life of rewriters, which are not the most robust devices in the world of computing (see manufacturers' figures for confirmation).
