Speccing a computer

Is there any guidelines on the best way to spec a computer to see if it is upto the job before buying a computer. For example how much memory will I need to run a 3D Application, what kind of graphics card do I need etc

Try the website of the manufacturer of the software you want to run on the computer. It will usually have a page setting out the minimum hardware requirements.
