Speakers- powered or non powered

I've just bought an HP base unit, as I had my own TFT monitor I just need to get speakers, according to the user guide these should be powered. Does anyone know if this means they will work better or will not work at all unless they are powered.
The machine seems OK but the documentation is dreadful.

Powered are better for sound quality and you have seperate bass, trebble and volume control.

'line in' ports i think the speakers have to be powered, 'line out' i think you can use self-powered.

the line in and out connections on a pc are high impedance and will not drive speakers directly. you will need powered speakers. the exception to this is the headphone socket on your ROM drive. this will drive high impedance earphones but is still useless for speakers.
