i have a sony flat screen monitor
at the back of it there is a pin hole for the speakers. i was told that i have a lead at the back of the tower which plugs in to the moniter
but i have not got one.
please can you tell me if i need to buy a jack to jack lead to plug into the monitor and tower.

On the rear of your PC's case, you should have multi coloured sound connections:

Bit of a rough idea, and the make and model of your PC will help. Your monitor will support Stereo only, so a 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm lead should be what you need.

Post back with the model of your PC and we can investigate further.

i have the blue pink and green outlet on the tower but only one pin for audio on the monitor

You connect the Green outlet on the tower to an connector on the monitor.

It should be a mini-jackplug at each end.

I see your monitor has two independant inputs, so you'll have to select which one you use in the monitor controls. Probably Audio1 will be the default.

This is the type of cable click here you can buy them just about any computer or TV/audio shop.
