Went on to Windows Update to see what was around (I normally update Windows automatically but get Office updates by visiting the site) and found SP3 there. I had been lead to believe that SP3 was part of the automatic update but presumably it is not. Is this version the final one without the previously reported problems and is it now safe to download?

It should be part of automatic updates. The final version is out a few folk having bother installing it.If you don't get offered it as part of your updates it may be better leaving it till you do.
