Soundcard Problems

I'm using an M-Audio 2496 sound card with Tannoy Active monitor speakers.

The lineout from the speakers is via a cable with a standard guitar jackplug. The in/outs of the soundcard are via phono sockets. I adapted a line out cable which enable the card and speakers to function correctly.

However, yesterday I unfortunately connected one of the speakers to the 'in' sockets of the card and the software I was using at the time - Cubase - stopped producing sound. I checked to find that there was also no signal being received from the card to the mixer. I also received a message informing me that the hardware (soundcard) has a problem. Since then the card has been unable to produce sound apart from a horrible noise through a speaker.

Is there a remedy for this or will I have to replace the card?
