soundblaster live 5.1 live digital problem

hi all,i have windows xp all up to date and a soundblaster 5.1 live digital(so many versions lol!) soundcard.its connected to a 6ch pre/power combo home cinema amp and i have the latest drivers...well at least i think i have.

the creative website lists the latest drivers, which i am using as 10/03/2003 but device manager says they are 24/07/2002 version 5.12.2.252.???

i have only had this card a few days, upgraded from my previous onboard ac97 sound and on the whole i am very happy with the quality,i can now get 5.1 from my dvds through the computer and eax is great for games compaired to pro logic surround i was stuck with before,however....

when i play a game,GTA vice city for example or listen to a music cd,once i quit and go back to windows my speaker settings in control panel/sounds and audio devices and in the audioHQ for the soundcard have changed to quadrophonic and 4 speakers respectivly and i need to change them back again to 5.1

not a big problem i know but its a bit annoying having to manually reset them all the time.i have checked creatives website(what a nightmare!!)and their forum and there is some peeps with this problem but not many answers.

onboard sound disabled in the bios before installing the new card and i have reinstalled the "latest" drivers three times,no conflicts etc and as above it all works great apart from this annoying bug.

any ideas why this is happening folks? ta.

I had a similar problem with the Audigy card. Every time I rebooted the PC it kept resetting to 2.1 instead of 4.1. Uninstalling & reinstalling sound card & drivers etc. solved the problem for me.

I sometimes find the settings change themselves to 4 speakers inexplicably. I usually just go into 'Diagnostics' run the speaker test and then restore defaults. This seems to work for a while but if not, following Peverelli's advice should work.

thanks folks,i have tried both the drivers from the disc that came with the card and from the creative site.

both cd and website version are the same ,as above click here says these are dated 10/03/2003.after i install them and check in device manager they are dated as 24/07/2002 version 5.12.2.252.

i noticed below the driver download that there is a patch which fixes:

"Speaker settings in Creative Audio Mixer are synchronized with Windows Multimedia setting"

the instructions to check which version of driver you have click here are a bit confusing,my version of ctaud2k.sys is 5.12.01.0252-1.31.0120 and ha10kx2k.sys is 5.12.01.0250-1.31.0090,so i think i dont need this patch.

uninstalled and reinstalled both about five times now and they both work ok.its just after i exit a game back to windows or finish playing a cd that my speaker settings change.its easy to change it back to 5.1 again every time but annoying none the less.
