Sound is quiet on computer

I recently bought a 2nd hand pc with onboard sound but the volume is very quiet. I've tried all the audio settings in the control panel and checked the volume bar in windows media player etc. I know its not a problem with the speakers because the volume is OK when used with another pc.

Would it be a good idea to buy a cheap pci sound card and over ride the onboard sound which is realtek I think?

Being onboard sound it probably isn't amplified - are your speakers independently powered, or do they run off the USB connection? The other PC you tried may have had a sound card which would account for the satisfactory volume.

If that is the case buy a pair of powered speakers - you can get a good pair very cheaply these days.

Also check the sound/audio listing in Device Manager to see if it shows any problems.

My other pc was onboard sound too but the speakers worked fine. There are sound cards on ebay for about £3 incl del. so I will get one.
