Sound problems with CoD 5

Just installed CoD world at war. Now I've lost sound on my PC. I'm using a PCi sound card as the onboard is knackered. Its not until I actually run the game when sound is lost, I lose both PC and game sound totally. The only way I can get sound back is to un-install the sound card, then re-install it again. Then once again, if I run the game I lose all sound and have to un-install/re-install the card again.
I can get sound in the game through the on-board but like I said its knackered, although audible, not usable.
I've updated the drivers for the sound card with no change.
OS is windows XP, the sound card is a cheap one, shows c-media in the control panel. Other games work fine through it.
Any help please.

I believe there are patches available already for this game they might help.

Are there jumpers on the mother board to disable the on-board sound?
