Have you tried to reinstall your soundcard driver?

  Terry Brown 08:55 12 Feb 2011

Go to Device manager (Easiest way-- Window key +Break, then select hardware, device manager)

Scroll down to sound and uninstall the sound drivers (Right click for options).

Reboot computer and XP should find and re-load the sound drivers automaticly.

Go to the manufactures website and download the latest drivers for your soundmax and install them.

Do you know the model number of the soundmax chip or card you have?

Neat little trick using pressing windows key+pause;break key
For those who don't know what key the windows key is,
it is the one with the windows logo on which is by the left Alt button
(if it is not there, you do not have it)
Saying as it is not obvious what the button is as a few months back, I did not even know I had it on the keyboard.
