Sound distortion

A young lady that I work with has asked for help with her laptop. It is an Acer 5044WLMi 1.8GHz Turion with Realtek HD audio. When she plays a dvd the sound is distorted, running slow, speach sounding like it came from a dalek. I have updated the audio drivers and cut down on background services but no improvement. I have even tried a a generic driver for a more basic sound but can't get it recognised. I'm out of ideas now, can any body help?

Thanks

Thanks, skidzy, should have thought of that myself, obviously one too many glasses of vino last night!
However, while that improves it a little bit, as does changing the settings from 5.1 to stereo, it's still not quite right.

what program is being used to play the dvds? i know that some dvd playing programs can modify audio- slow it down and/or change the pitch. perhaps the default settings have changed? have a look at the settings the video/dvd playing program offers-im sure its probably not that, but worth a go :)
