Sound Device problem in WMP in one user account

  Boluwd 17:47 04 Aug 2007

I have three user accounts set up on my PC. When I am logged on, WMP 11 (and previous versions) will not play audio, although sound is ok in ITunes and Winamp. In WMP I get the message that "WMP cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed, it may be in use by another program or it may not be functioning properly". However, when my wife or the other account is logged on, WMP has no problem in playing audio. It's only in my user account. I have also noticed that the Windows logon sound does not happen when I log on but does with the other two accounts.
What the hell is this all about? it 'coz me Welsh!!!!

This has now been solved.

There was an entry in the registry, current user (mine) under software/microsoft/mediaplayer/preferences/DefaultAudioDevice
with a string.

This Defaultaudiodevice entry did not appear in the other two user account registey entries.

I renamed the entry to defaultaudiodeviceold and everything is fine again.

I'm going to treat myself to a glass of wine!
