Sound desision

I've just read some previous posts, but they dont give me what Im looking for. I recently pluged my Pc into my Hifi as I've started using it as a 'duke box'. However the sound sounds worse than when I played it through a cheap dedicated 2.1 pc speaker set. It's an MSI mobo with via chipset, & I'm using the onboard sound.
Also currently my Dvds wont play sound giving a message to the effect I need a codec to play 5.1 through stereo (despite trying several promising codecs - no joy) I think a sound card may resolve some of these issues ie better sound through my Hifi. But do I want a 5.1 card. I'm not going to wire the extra speakers, but would it allow me to play 5.1 in stereo? What adaptors am I likley to need? (I've just bought a 3.5mm stereo jack to phono (Hifi has phono)) Any budget recomendations?
