Sound card not working in one half of dual boot ma

In a dual boot machine using two HDD's, one running 98SE and the other XP, the sound works OK in XP but not in 98SE. All drivers and HW are OK in both systems, but only one works. Any ideas?

Have you checked it's not muted somewhere? By far the most common complaint!

Have you checked for any conflicts in the device manager, under system properties for the Windows 98SE system?

"Thank you Peter I've checked out all that. Nothing appears to be wrong, the same audio driver is loaded in 98SE as XP and dialogue boxes report that everything is working properly. Mind you, I've experienced other snafus where the machine has been adamant it is working OK when obviously it wasn't. It might come down to a system reload in the end."

Reply:- Perhaps the XP version of the driver is not suitable for Windows 98. Have you ever had this sound card working under Windows 98?

what soundcard are you using?is there maybe a different driver available from the manufacturers website for win98 that you should be using?

what version of direct x do you have installed on win98?(may be relevent, dont know)

try start/run type dxdiag click ok

click the system tab and look at the "version no."at the bottom of screen.

click the sound and music tabs and run the you hear any sounds/music or any errors reported?

try updating the soundcard drivers to direct x9 compatable ones(latest versions)from the manufacturers website and download and install direct x9b mabye click here

Anyone else got any ideas?

Can you please tell us the name and model of the sound card.

Are you referring to no sound from a CD drive, from files, or both?

For example, with your speakers switched on, do you get the Windows "chimes" on startup?
