Sony Vaio Laptop 6GB RAM W7 64bit intel i5 cpu.

Malwaebytes run - 100 files removed. Avast updated and full scan - clean. All Windows updates applied, all Sony Vaio care updates applied.
All messages in Action centre dealt with.

Cpuid monitor installed for temperatures - OK - gets up to 55 then fan cuts in and brings back down to 42

Laptop still freezes up. Worst culprit is control panel - almost completes then freezes up.

Task manager running shows about 95 cpu and 335 RAM.

Ctrl - Alt - Del works if I am very patient and allows a shutdown otherwise it is a hold the power button in to get it to shut down.

Puzzled as to what to try next, have reseated HDD but still same.

Forgot to mention have used Ccleaner - took 6GB of crap off! Laptop is about 2 year old.

Typo that should be 9% cpu and 33% ram

Memtest a good place to start but try running the system file checker a few times as well. Link.

Should have added to run CHKDSK as well and select both options in the check disk options screen, Link.

Add Spybot S&D to your arsenal. Free and may find the culprit

  rdave13 17:32 15 Dec 2013

wee eddie, I agree with you. Spybot has come a long way to what it was. I remember it being a favourite here many years ago.

Thank you all for the replies.

It is amazing what you forget to do! I should have run checkdisk - have done so after being prompted and after only 3% it has found 10 unreadable segments and is now correcting errors.

I will try memtest as well once this is complete.

Further question. Will Clonezilla clone the hard drive with unreadable segments?

A lot here suggest Macrium Reflect as being a free and good cloner. It will ignore bad sectors. I mus state that I've not used it though.

Thanks again. Chkdsisk appears to have done the trick.
