I have a Vaio VGN FS315S which operates on windows XP. I had to replace the AC adaptor a few months ago as the cord heated up. Its doing this again and the battery does not last for more than 30 mins.

In the mean time as i get his looked into, is it safe to use the laptop on direct AC adaptor power without using the laptop?

the AC adaptor does not seem to heat up when i have taken the battery out.

is this a common problem?

regards

the ammount of power to run the laptop is low.

the amount of power to run laptop AND charge battery is much higher so adaptor will get hot.

if battery is not lasting longer than 30 mins on a full charge then battery is US.

laptop is safe to use on mains with battery removed.

There are several reasons for intermittent shut down.

Auto-reboot disable:
When Running windows and it crashes you will get a blue screen and it will automatically restart, often it will restart too fast for you to see the error message.
To disable auto restart on system failure, so you can see the error message.

1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System (Windows+Pause works, too)
2. Go to Advanced
3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
4. Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"

Post the error message here for further help.
