Son's computer causes router to drop internet

This is similar to a thread from the Autumn, but not quite the same.
When I switch on son's new xp PC, connected with wired LAN to a Netgear DG834 v2 the shared tiscali connection goes into a drop-reconnect-drop-for-ever cycle. If I plug my laptop into son's network connection point everything works just fine. So it seems to be the PC. The network itself works fine with the PC, for sharing files and printing. The broadband connection is not the best - we live out in the sticks a long way from the exchange.
Any thoughts?

Check the LAN card and network setting is correct

Yes I agree, check the LAN Card. Might need replaced.

It has onboard LAN. Just out of curiosity I disabled it and substituted a PCI LAN card. No change, that is the network worked fine for file transfer and printing but it caused an immediate internet dropout.
