Socket 754

  Thatslife 11:34 02 Mar 2007

I would like to upgrade my processor - Currently have AMD 64 3400.

Of the top of anyones head, do you know what the fastest processor I can get for this socket??

The motherboard manufacturer's website should have information as to the fastest CPU the board can handle.

You will need to check your motherboard for it might restrict your processor.

Checked it out and not sure what it's telling me:-

'Socket 754 for AMD K8 Athlon 64 processor'

Does this mean I can have any AMD 64 procesor that fots this socket?

You must just be looking at the motherboard's basic specifications.

In the manufacturer's website there should be a Support link - find your motherboard and you should be able to find out its CPU handling abilities.

Here's an example (from the Gigabyte website):

I would think that you cannot upgrade the CPU you have as socket 754 was superceded by socket 939, socket AM2 and possibly other versions since that.

Judging by these two links:

the maximum processor is a 3700+. You probably wouldn't notice much difference compared with your present CPU.

I would tend to agree with you, any difference would most likely be negligible.
